Strategy, improved governance and implementation plan
Client
The Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM) is dedicated to developing and uniting Australasian senior police leaders. It aims to improve leaders’ decision-making capabilities within a complex environment to ensure the best outcome for the community. To achieve this mission, the AIPM provides executive development programs for senior police and emergency services leaders.
Situation
The AIPM wanted to engage a significant group of stakeholders and staff to develop a five year strategic plan. The plan was to set the direction, governance arrangements and performance measures for the AIPM and also address the requirements of a recent review. The AIPM engaged Nous Group to undertake this strategic process so that is could present a draft plan, proposed governance arrangements and an implementation strategy to the AIPM Board of Control (BOC).
Solution
Nous’ stakeholder engagement strategy was critical to the project’s success. We worked in partnership with the AIPM’s Executive Director and his project team to identify the crucial questions that would inform the AIPM’s strategic direction. Answers to the questions were revealed through interviews with a select group of key stakeholders. Combined with information gathered through a data review, the insights were used in two half-day workshops with state, federal and New Zealand police jurisdictions, emergency services and AIPM staff. We used these tightly-managed consultation processes to develop a comprehensive strategic plan, a proposal for governance options and an outline implementation plan.
Result
The BOC, which comprises state, federal and New Zealand police commissioners endorsed the strategic plan and a governance approach. The AIPM will now finalise the plan which establishes its direction for the next five years and proceed to implementation.
