The Nous Group's understanding of the Creative Industry...
1 May 2009
The Nous Group has recently completed two seminal reviews in the creative industry for the New South Wales and Victorian governments.
New South Wales
Working closely with the Department of State and Regional Development, Nous completed a detailed examination of the NSW Creative Industry. An authoritative evidence base of the industry was developed, covering the industry as a whole and its 11 sectors (advertising, architecture, design, electronic games, film, music, performing arts, publishing, radio, television and visual arts). Using data from various Australian Bureau of Statistics publications and other sources, the evidence base analysed data for each sector on employment and income, revenue, exports and businesses formation and size. Other key sector insights were also presented. A key finding was that, contrary to public perception, NSW’s dominates the creative industry in Australia and largely maintained its dominance from the mid 1990s to the mid 2000s.
Building on the evidence base, the project examined the present role of the NSW Government in the creative industry and considered what role the government could play to further stimulate innovation in the industry. A series of recommendations were developed which were presented to the NSW Innovation Council. In developing the recommendations, Nous facilitated a series of workshops with industry participants.
Two documents were developed and publicly released:
Victoria
Working closely with the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development, Nous completed a major review at a critical time for Victoria’s $500m film, television and electronic games sectors. The rising Australian dollar was threatening to undermine the attraction of footloose film and TV projects and fee-for-service games development projects to Victoria. Locally owned and originated production and development activity was stagnant. The Government was seeking expert advice on where to focus its support for the industry.
The report was developed in close consultation with stakeholders from across the industry. The report: identified the major opportunities and threats facing the global, Australian and Victorian screen industry; analysed the current state of the Victorian screen industry and included sector-by-sector assessments of growth drivers and market conditions; and articulated a vision for the industry, including target outcomes and performance indicators.
