Development and implementation of a business transformation strategy
The Royal Australian Navy engaged Nous to lead an integrated Navy / Nous team and develop and implement the New Generation Navy (NGN) strategy for its 12,000 people. Nous supported Navy to develop and implement a business transformation strategy that identified three pillars of change:
- Culture change: to ensure Navy focused on the wellbeing of its people and reinforced Navy’s signature behaviours
- Structure change: to improve accountability and connect the training pipeline
- Leadership and ethics development: to ensure Navy’s leaders develop their leadership capacity and put their people first.
Nous consultants engaged over 50 key stakeholders within Navy and across Defence, and met with over 500 people across Australia. This enabled Nous to draw on the deep organisational understanding of its people and engage personnel in the change.
Following a successful strategy launch in April 2009, Navy re-engaged Nous to drive implementation within each of the three pillars of change. Nous guided the implementation of six dedicated culture projects to address key cultural issues; designed and facilitated a series of workshops, 360 degree feedback and debrief sessions for senior leaders; designed and implemented tailored and cascading leadership programs for middle to senior leaders within Navy; and supported implementation of the detailed organisational structure.
A year on, the organisation is well on the way towards New Generation Navy. Organisational leaders are actively solving some of Navy’s toughest challenges, led by an increasingly cohesive leadership group, supported by a clear structure that enables a focus on Navy’s priorities.
