State government central agency

Client

A high performing state government central agency with 600 staff.

Challenge

To improve the performance of an already high performing department (as judged by ministers and other chief executives). The department requested that Nous engage with it in a long term partnership to:

  • Facilitate the department’s strategic and business planning
  • Work with the departmental executive to define the six key initiatives required to develop the organisation - Reaching our Potential
  • Design and deliver a leadership program for the department’s 70 executive officers, and subsequently the next level of managers.

Solution

Nous has been working with the department for five years facilitating its strategic and business planning, and during that time has worked with the Executive to develop the six key initiatives. Further development of these initiatives has been managed through an internal project team, with support from Nous as required.
Nous has also designed and delivered an innovative development program comprising residential modules, individualised feedback and coaching, peer‑partnering and the on-going development of individuals and teams.
A 360° feedback diagnostic based on the department’s aspiration and behavioural accountability framework was designed, administered and debriefed, with the results helping participants to devise their individual development plans.
The program comprised a common stream of workshops that executive officers of all levels participated in together. The departmental executive played an important role in leading and supporting those workshops that were facilitated by Nous facilitators.

Outcome

  • Very strong alignment with and commitment to the department’s broader leadership with its strategic direction
  • Continued growth of organisational performance, such that ministerial expectations have been continually upgraded
  • A significantly strengthened position in the labour market, where the department is highly regarded as an exciting and rewarding employer within very limited remuneration practices
  • Increased networks throughout the organisation, and renewed energy shown by long time executives
  • Significant improvement in the effectiveness of communication up and down the organisation.
