Health & ageing
Access to the best possible health service is something every citizen aspires to for themselves and their family. Our health and ageing services are provided through a complex system of structures and providers. Demand for these services is growing and increasingly complex.
Change is occurring at all levels in the health and ageing system. Renegotiated funding and structural arrangements will be implemented over the next several years and the implications of the national health reforms will be considerable. The ongoing imperative of efficiency in service delivery and a system and behavioural shift to preventative health and positive ageing will continue to drive reforms.
To ensure that these changes lead to genuine, positive and enduring improvements, we need to answer the following questions:
-
What governance structures will be most effective in an increasingly devolved system with heightened accountabilities?
-
What strategies will help an informed citizenry to be actively involved in managing their own wellbeing and treatment?
-
What are the most effective strategies for health workforce development and retention?
-
How do we meet the needs of older people and people with a disability as responsibilities for these cohorts shift between the Commonwealth and states?
-
How do we effectively support uptake of preventative health strategies, thereby reducing the burden of chronic disease?
